What musical period is the piece Sicilienne by Faure from?
Q. I need to write about the musical period the piece I have chosen to perform for my music CW. The one I have is arranged for flute and piano.

A. Faure is late 19th Century French but if you are going to play him, you should really do a bit of background reading on him so you can put some expression into your music. Naxos have a decent collection of his recordings and Kathryn Scott has recording his complete piano works. He was also friends with many of the literary figures of the time.

Is the musical Hairspray considered racist or offensive?
Q. I haven't had the chance to see what the film is many about, but people keep telling me it's about caucasian kids who want to be black and that the movie is really racist or something. Are they telling the truth or not? Or is this musical/movie even worth seeing? I meant racist against white people, is what they told me.

A. Hairspray is about racism, but not in the way you are describing. It is about accepting those differences, be it skin color or body weight, and triumphing. People will always find new and inexplicable was to be offended though, so I can't say you would definitely care for the stage production or the movie. However, I found it amusing and would recommend seeing it if you enjoy musicals.

What are musical theatre majors expected to know from the beginning?
Q. I'm a junior in high school and I want to major in musical theatre. I have some experience in singing and acting, but only very basic experience in dance. How much will I be expected to know when I first start the program? Should I be looking for dance classes? Thanks so much to anyone who answers!

A. The quality and experience of your fellow theater majors are going to vary according to the competitiveness of the performing arts program you choose, and the variety of concentrations it offers. Most state universities and their branches and most community colleges get a real mix of talent and experience ranging to kids in the third year of college who suddenly switch to performing arts because they got involved in their very first production last semester. I wouldn't sweat it. Any instruction or experience you can muster before enrolling is a healthy plus, and may give you a head start on some of the more demanding work within the curriculum not to mention a competitive edge when auditioning for specific productions.
