Championship is a term used in sport to refer to various forms of competition in which the aim is to decide which individual or team is the champion. I know in UFC 92 that Nog and Mir are going to fight for the interim heavyweight championship. I was also looking at GSP's record and saw that after he won and lost the ww championship, he won the interim championship and then beat previously injured Matt Serra to become the undisputed ww championship. It is deemed the interim championship if the current undisputed champion cannot defend his belt. In the case of Randy Couture, he was in and out of court disputing his contract with the UFC. Dana White decided to introduce the interim championship in the HW division so that there would be a champion who is able to fight. They take the two top contenders in the division and set up a fight. Randy Couture would have been stripped of his belt had his contract been terminated, and Nog would be the undisputed HW champ. Since Randy is able to fight the winner of Nog vs Mir would normally face Randy. But Joe Silva and Dana White got extreme and set up a "tournament" for the championship.
