South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea (ROK) (Korean: 대한민국, pronounced [tɛːhanminɡuk̚] ( listen)), is a country in East Asia, located on the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula. It is neighbored by China to the west, Japan to the east, and North Korea to the north. Its capital is Seoul. South Korea lies in a temperate climate region with a predominantly mountainous terrain. Its territory covers a total area of 99,392 square kilometers and has a population of over 48 million.

Archaeological findings show that the Korean Peninsula was occupied by the Lower Paleolithic period. Korean history begins with the founding of Gojoseon in 2333 BC by the legendary Dan-gun. Following the unification of the Three Kingdoms of Korea under Silla 668 AD, Korea went through the Goryeo Dynasty and Joseon Dynasty as one nation until the end of the Korean Empire in 1910, when Korea was annexed by Japan. After liberation and occupation by Soviet and U.S. forces at the end of World War II, the nation was divided into North and South Korea. The latter was established in 1948 as a democracy.

After the invasion of South Korea by forces from the North on 25 June 1950, the resulting war between the two Koreas ended in an uneasy cease-fire, and the border between the two nations is currently the most heavily-fortified in the world. After the war, the South Korean economy grew significantly and the country was transformed into a major economy, a full democracy, and a regional power in East Asia.

South Korea is a presidential republic consisting of sixteen administrative divisions and is a developed country with a very high standard of living. It is Asia's fourth largest economy and world's 15th (nominal) or 12th (purchasing power parity) largest economy. The economy is export-driven, with production focusing on electronics, automobiles, ships, machinery, petrochemicals and robotics. South Korea is a member of the United Nations, WTO, OECD and G-20 major economies. It is also a founding member of APEC and the East Asia Summit.

A. In 1978, Korea signed the CERD (Convention on Eliminating All Forms of Racial Discrimination). However, 32 years later, its permanent residency system is still blatantly racially discriminatory, making it nearly impossible for foreigners to get permanent residency unless they have Korean blood. I hope that Korea faces its UN obligations in the near future -- it is long overdue. One has to wonder why Korea signed this UN convention when it had no plans to enforce it within its own borders. If you want to live in Korea long-term, you really have three options: 1. Continue on short-term visas (work and study visas), good for one year each, and pray to God that you don't get turned down one year. 2. Get permanent residency. As I will explain… [cont.]

A. DO NOT clinch your hand into a tight fist and then thrust it into another persons nose. Oddly enough this is considered highly offensive in Korea. I spent 4 months in south Korea and thrust my clinched hand into people noses/faces repeatedly. Image the surprise when I found out that no one there likes this!

What are the visa requirements for a Philippine citizen to enter South Korea to visit a military memeber?
Q. I would like my fiance to come visit me while I'm stationed in South Korea. Every website I visit gives me different information. I went through the same headache when I was stationed in Japan, all the paperwork, and the interviews and they still turned her visa down. I'm just trying to cover my bases and gather all the vital information I need before I send the paperwork to her and tell her to go to the embassy and try to get a visa. If anyone has any information, or any past experience in this topic, it would be greatly appreciated.

A. hi! i'm a filipina. i'm in korea right now. this is what we did: my husband's Korean professor prepared a notarized invitation letter together with a copy of inviting party's passport requesting my presence assuring that she would only come to visit for the said purpose. this is apart from other VISA requirements. however, the duration of my VISA depended on the consul's discretion. for tourist visa, usually i think 7-15 days. so it depends on the purpose of your visit. i understand that most embassies are strict about this since others use it as stepping stone for them to be able to stay longer in a particular country. god bless you!
